Can I bring my pet on the ferry between Ireland and Britain?
Yes. Irish Ferries allows pets on its Irish Sea routes for:
Motorists (cars, vans, motorhomes)
Foot passengers and Motorcyclists (when booked into a Kennel or the Pet Den)
You must add your pet at the time of booking, as space is limited (maximum 5 pets per booking).
Where can my pet stay during the ferry crossing?
You can choose one of a number of options:
1. Pets stays in your vehicle:
Your pet remains in your car for the journey. Make sure to provide:
- Fresh water
- Food
- Toys
- and leave a window slightly open for ventilation
Best for pets that are more comfortable in their own car / vehicle
2. Use the onboard Pet Den
Pre-book the Pet Den area to get access to:
- Dedicated indoor space for pets and owners
- Access to an outdoor walkway
There are Pet Dens available on Ulysses, James Joyce and Isle of Innisfree.
Pets must:
- Stay in the Pet Den area on a lead
- Be supervised by an adult at all times
- Wear a muzzle if they are a restricted breed
Best for owners that want to stay with their pets
3. Pets stays in the Kennel on the Car Deck:
Your pet remains in a kennel on the car deck for the journey - available on Ulysses and Dublin Swift. Make sure to provide:
- Bedding
- Fresh water
- Food
- Toys
Best for foot or motorcyclist passengers whose pets prefer to be on their own
4. Book a Pet Cabin
Pre-book a Pet Friendly Cabin to get access to:
- a Private comfortable cabin for owners and pets (max of 2 pets per cabin)
- Access to an outdoor walkway
There are Pet Cabins available on the James Joyce only
Best for owners that want to stay with their pets but in a quiet private area
What documents do I need to travel with my pet?
Your pet must have:
- A valid EU Pet Passport OR
- GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
- A microchip
- A current rabies vaccination
- Note: Since April 2026, EU pet passports are no longer valid for Great Britain residents.
What are the vaccination requirements for pets?
All dogs, cats, and ferrets must:
- Be vaccinated against rabies
- Receive the vaccine at least 21 days before travel
- Administered by a registered vet
- Recorded in official documentation
Do dogs need tapeworm treatment?
Yes, if travelling into Ireland.
- Treatment must be given: 24 to 120 hours before arrival (1–5 days)
- Must be administered by a vet
- Must be recorded in documentation
Does my pet need a microchip?
Yes. Microchipping is mandatory.
- Must be done before or at the same time as rabies vaccination
- Must comply with ISO standards (11784/11785)
- Chip number must match official documents
When should I check in if travelling with a pet?
You must check in at least 60 minutes before departure. This allows time for:
